Burnt Children of Nicaragua Association

Letter from the Executive Director and Creator of APROQUEN

Executive Director of AproquenDear Friends,

Welcome to our web page, Burnt Children of Nicaragua Association. I would like to share with you a miracle of a story that not only completely changed my life but also introduced me to the world of fire, suffering and charity.

On October 21st, 1989 my husband and I were flying on Sahsa Flight 727 (Honduras Airline Service) from Managua to Miami with a stop in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. At 7:50 AM the unexpected happened and the commercial plane crashed into the Honduran Hule Mountain, leaving 149 people dead and only 9 survivors. The accident has ever since been one of the most tragic in Central American aviation history. Incredibly, I survived. I thank my husband who helped me get out of the blazing plane and I infinitely thank God who protected my husband and I from the scorching flames and explosions.

“We were transfered to the United States via air where we underwent multiple surgeries. I can assure you the pain was so unbearable that the suffering was comparable to death. My mind and body got to a point where I truly felt that any further increase in the intensity of my suffering would be with every certainty the cause of my death. But it was the love for my children and family as well as an inner and hidden desire to help others that motivated me to fight for survival. Pushing myself, I finally managed to overcome the agonizing pain of the burns and the 62 fractures in my face and body".

Today I understand what I couldn’t back then: the reason for my survival, which manifests itself every second of everyday. That reason is to provide help and care to others. Everyday, I take a step forward in helping the children (mostly burnt) and people of my country by dedicating my life’s work to the Burnt Children of Nicaragua Association (APROQUEN).

I am convinced that I am not here by mere coincidence, but by the will of God. God has opened new doors for me and has provided me with the clear purpose of carrying out a mission in our impoverished country of Nicaragua. A mission whose purpose is centered on

 “ Turning Tears into Smiles”.
